biography
Sean “DJ Spen” Spencer is a pioneering figure in soulful house music — a DJ, producer, and label executive whose career spans more than four decades. From his early beginnings in Baltimore’s radio and club scene to his global influence as head of Quantize Recordings, Spen’s journey is defined by passion, authenticity, and the power of groove.
Spen’s love affair with music began at just 13 years old, spinning hip-hop and R&B records on local radio in Baltimore. In the 1980s, he co-founded the hip-hop group Numarx, co-writing the hit “Girl You Know It’s True,” which later became a worldwide smash. But it was the pull of house music — with its fusion of gospel soul and dance-floor rhythm — that set Spen on his lifelong creative path.
In the early ’90s, Spen joined the legendary Basement Boys collective, contributing to numerous influential releases and honing the warm, vocal-driven production style that would become his signature. His work with Jasper Street Company brought forth house anthems that blended gospel intensity with club energy — a sound that helped shape the genre’s evolution.
In 2004, Spen launched Code Red Recordings, and soon after, he founded Quantize Recordings and its sister label Unquantize, platforms dedicated to soulful, uplifting dance music. As CEO, he’s fostered a roster of international talent and released acclaimed projects from artists like Barbara Tucker, David Morales, and The MuthaFunkaz.
As a DJ, Spen’s sets are celebrated for their emotional depth and irresistible energy. Whether commanding the decks at Defected Croatia, Southport Weekender, or intimate underground venues around the world, he brings an unmistakable sense of soul and connection. His productions and remixes — released on labels such as Defected, Nervous, and his own Quantize imprint — continue to dominate charts and playlists, uniting generations of house fans.
With roots in gospel, hip-hop, and soul, DJ Spen’s sound is timeless yet forward-thinking — a reminder that true house music lives in the spirit as much as in the beat.
