biography
Sybil Lynch, is a soul and dance diva who came from Paterson, New Jersey. She adopted the name Sybil early on and has been affectionately called that for her entire career. Sybil for many years has been considered the holder of one of the most beautiful and exceptional voices of the last two decades, especially among her contemporaries. Although she has always found a warmer reception in the dance community her versatility has been displayed in a number of genres.
She originally started her music career with Ce Ce Rogers in the group Ce Ce & Company before she left to sign with ‘Next Plateau’ record label. Her debut single ‘Falling In love’ was released in 1986 and peaked at No 68 in the British singles chart. The chart position didn’t represent the magnitude of what this song would become. It became a regional hit in the clubs around the US and abroad. And today it can still be heard on many weekend dance shows in the US. This was the first in a long line of club and radio successes and her initial introduction to the world of touring. Her follow up single ‘Let Yourself Go’ (1987) managed to get her a British Top 40 hit following with the single ‘My Love is Guaranteed’ (1987) which made the Top 50. At the end of 1987, both tracks were respectively voted as two of the top ten dance records of the year. Ultimately garnering a legion of fans in the clubs and the DJ’s who played at the clubs. In 1987 she also released her debut album ‘Let Yourself Go’, which just made the British Top 100, peaking at No 92. It would not be until 1989 until she would chart again with the single ‘Don’t Make Me Over’, which peaked at No 19 in the British charts.
Her biggest success was still to come and in 1990 she signed with the legendary British pop-meisters S.A.W. (Stock Aitken & Waterman). Her first British single with them was, ‘Walk On By’ (1990), which became her first Top 10 single. Sadly, though her next single ‘Crazy For You’ (1990) only managed to peak in the British Top 80. She did peak at No 21 though in the British charts with her second album ‘Walk On By’ (1990).
Three years later in 1993 Sybil returned to release what would become her two biggest selling British singles. The first was as the featured vocals on the West End song ‘The Love I Lost’ which would be her biggest selling single, peaking at No 3 on the national charts, yet reaching No. 1 on many dance charts around Britain and Europe. It became and still manages to be a floor-filler and a certifiable anthem. The second single was ‘When I’m Good And Ready’, which peaked at No 5 in the charts and would become the song she would be most remembered for. In 1993 she also released, what was to become, her last album ‘Good ‘N’ Ready’, which peaked at No 13. The start of 1993 began very successfully but ended very differently. After her two British Top 10 hits she released three more singles that year and all of them only managed to peak in the British Top 50. Sybil would not chart again until another three years had passed.
In 1996 she returned with little British chart success with the single ‘So Tired of Being Alone’, which peaked at No 53. It would not be until a year later that she would release her last ever two singles. The first was a re-mix of ‘When I’m Good And Ready’ (1997); peaking at No 66 and her final single ‘Still A Thrill’ peaked at No 55 in the British charts. Sybil’s work with Tom Browne (Jamaica Funk) and Lenny White (World-renowned drummer) has had her performing around the world at some of the world’s premier Jazz Festivals in her time away from the dance scene.
Not to be boxed in Sybil has explored a cross-section of musical genres, enabling her to bring an originality and distinction to her music. From 1993 through 2004, Sybil was half of a very successful tour called, Sisters of Soul, with dear friend Angie Brown (of Bizarre Inc. fame) and on occasion Allison Limerick. The Sisters of Soul tour garnered two Dance PA’s of the year. She managed to stay in the forefront by doing what she does best wowing her audiences. During this time, she performed in some theatre productions and continued to do sessions with some of her musical friends. Some of these collaborations led to work with the production team of Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan, better known as Blaze. The result was an infectious soulful dance ditty called, ‘When I Fall In Love’, which has seen some success on the dance floors around the world. This opened the doors for other producers to court her vocal skills on some of their other projects. In 2005 she returned to the British stage, performing alongside Hazel Dean, Jason Donavon and Sonia in London. It was the launch night of PWL (Pete Waterman Limited) Radio. This was to be a re-emergence for the diva that is still in demand. To say she returned with a vengeance is an understatement.
