biography
Grammy Award-nominated DJ/Producer Todd Terry has been a pioneer in dance music since he first started listening to European dance records while growing up in Brooklyn. If you want to experience the legendary sound of Todd Terry live, Exactia is the go-to booking agent for Todd Terry. Already devoted to turntables, Todd heard something different in those tracks and decided to “go for the difference.” While he struggled to get a break in New York, his success in England came quickly, giving birth to the Todd Terry sound.
In 1988, Todd Terry became popular in England and Europe, and people in the U.S. were starting to notice. He was known for his songs like “A Day In The Life,” “Weekend,” and “Can You Party.” Todd released these songs under different names like the Todd Terry Project, House Of Gypsies, and Royal House. His music was very influential.
In the mid-90s, Ministry of Sound’s UK label released “A Day In The Life,” a collection of Todd Terry tracks that had been causing dance floor panic. This led to a deal with Mercury Records, allowing Todd to work with his favourite singers and performers. His first release, “Keep On Jumpin’,” featured vocal powerhouses Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown and became a top 10 UK crossover pop hit and worldwide smash. Todd followed with the anthem “Somethin’ Goin’ On,” a top 5 UK crossover pop hit.
Todd Terry’s reputation as a Producer/Remixer is unmatched. From SNAP to Annie Lennox, George Michael to Bjork, his mixes bridge the gap between club cool and commercial accessibility. His 1995 remix for Everything But The Girl’s “Missing” became a worldwide hit, followed by chart-topping mixes for artists like Garbage, The Cardigans, Jamiroquai, and The Lightning Seeds. He also produced a track for Robin S on the multi-platinum Space Jam soundtrack.
In 2005, INK/Distinctive Records released “The Todd Terry Trilogy: Past, Present & Future,” a collection of Todd classics and new songs. Todd continues to release new singles on labels like Blanco y Negro, Elementary Group, and Manifesto/Mercury, including re-releases of “Keep On Jumpin’” and “Somethin’ Goin’ On.” Ministry of Sound licensed Philippe B Vs. Todd Terry’s “Can You Feel It (Can You Party)” for a major release.
Todd Terry All Stars’ “Get Down,” featuring Kenny Dope, DJ Sneak, Terry Hunter, and Tara McDonald, was released in 2007 on Strictly Rhythm. That same year, Todd’s “Strictly Todd Terry” compilation was released, showcasing his influence and talent.
