biography
The Sugarhill Gang, formed in 1979 in Englewood, New Jersey, made history with Rapper’s Delight, the first rap single to reach the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 40. Though they never had another U.S. hit, they found success in Europe with songs like Apache and 8th Wonder.
Originally assembled by producer Sylvia Robinson, the group featured Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike, and Master Gee. They disbanded in 1985 but reunited in 1994. Legal disputes followed, with members reclaiming their stage names and forming Rapper’s Delight Featuring Wonder Mike and Master Gee.
In 2009, they released Lala Song with Bob Sinclar. Founding member Big Bank Hank passed away in 2014. The group continues to tour worldwide, celebrating hip-hop’s legacy. As of 2024, its lineup includes Wonder Mike, Master Gee, Hen Dogg, DJ T-Dynasty, and Ethiopian King.
